About Karen

Through her art, Karen has created new worlds for as long as she can remember. From age 5, her family knew she was destined for the arts -she transformed the family basement into her own studio because the living room was no longer big enough to hold her piles and piles of drawings.

The need to make space for art has never faded. She kept painting even while obtaining a B.A. in Economics from Oberlin College and a law degree from Case Western Reserve University. While working as a lawyer, Karen started her own law practice rather than working at a large firm, because she wanted Fridays off to create. Karen says, “Art is my balance. It’s where I can escape into the world of inner knowing.”

Karen’s art has been a spiritual practice, one way she taps into the language of her soul. As an Intuitive and passionate Seeker, she spent years training in various creative, spiritual and energy systems with a wide array of teachers and healers. Karen integrates these tools into her art, coaching and teaching while still creating her own pieces. She has a passion for collage, encaustics, mixed media, and painting.

Karen teaches unique workshops using art and visualization as a springboard to opening limiting blocks and discovering and expanding one’s creative potential for both art and life. Over the last 30 years her work has evolved from representational and impressionistic to abstract and intuitive. She draws upon her travels from the American Southwest and the French countryside to the plains of Kenya to inspire and enhance her art.

Artist Statement

I love the immediacy of working with paint and wax – every color flow and mix has a life of its own. I get to play and respond in the moment as if dancing with the pigment. I paint intuitively, letting the pieces speak to me as I create. This way of working is a meditation, a practice of stilling the mind and being in the moment, allowing the unfolding of the creation. This practice reminds me we are always in creative flow and to stay present to the magic in life.

I want the same moment of meditation for my viewers. I want their experience to grow the longer they look at my pieces. They are intended to be a mystery that draws the viewer in on a visual adventure, with a feast of color, shape and texture. I believe art affects on an energetic level and can transform the spirit. May my pieces inspire, uplift and transform you on some level.
